Privacy Policy
Effective 4 October 2026
In short
- We collect what we need to run your account and stream to you: your details, devices, what you watch, and payment records.
- Paystack handles card details — they never reach us. We don’t sell your data or use advertising cookies.
- You can download your data or delete your account at any time from your account settings.
1. Who we are
HOK TV (“we”, “us”) is a streaming service for original films, series and documentaries, operated by HOK TV in Nigeria. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.
We process personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) and, where it applies to you, the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Questions about privacy go to support@hoktv.com.
2. The data we collect
Account details you give us: your name, email address, password, and optionally your country and preferred language. Your password is stored only as a one-way hash (bcrypt) — we cannot read it.
If you sign in with Google: your Google account ID, name, email address and profile photo, as shared by Google with your permission.
Devices and sign-ins: for each device you sign in on, a device name derived from your browser and operating system, your IP address, and when it was last active. This is what you see on the Your devices page.
Viewing activity: titles you play and where you stopped (so you can resume), titles you save to your list, and the star ratings you give. When you press play we also record a short-lived playback session (your IP address and browser details), valid for up to 6 hours, to protect our videos from unauthorised copying.
Payments: payments are made on Paystack’s secure page. Paystack collects your card or bank details — we never receive or store them. We keep a record of each payment: the reference, amount, currency, status, plan and any promo code used, plus your membership start and end dates.
Messages to us: if you email support, we keep that correspondence so we can help you.
3. How we use your data, and why we are allowed to
- To provide the service — create and secure your account, stream titles, remember your progress, list and ratings, and manage your membership. Basis: performance of our contract with you.
- To take payments and keep records — confirm payments with Paystack and keep transaction records. Basis: contract, and our legal obligations.
- To keep accounts and content safe — detect suspicious sign-ins, let you sign out other devices, prevent fraud and unauthorised copying, and investigate abuse. Basis: our legitimate interests in running a secure service.
- To show ratings — each title’s average rating and count are shown publicly. Your individual rating is never shown with your name.
- To support you — answer your questions and requests.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising profiles.
6. International transfers
Some of our providers store or process data outside Nigeria, including in the European Union and the United States. Where data leaves Nigeria, we rely on safeguards recognised under the NDPA — such as the destination’s data-protection laws and our providers’ contractual commitments — to keep it protected.
7. How long we keep data
- Your account, viewing activity, list, ratings and payment records are kept while your account exists.
- Playback sessions expire after at most 6 hours. Sign-in sessions expire after 7 days, or as soon as you sign out or remove the device.
- When you delete your account, we permanently delete your profile, sign-in methods, devices, viewing history, list, ratings, memberships and the payment records we hold. Paystack keeps its own record of your payments as financial law requires. A record that a staff member acted on an account (without your profile details) may remain in our security logs.
- Backups may hold deleted data for a short period before they are overwritten.
8. Your rights
You can:
- Access and take your data — download a copy anytime from Account → Data & privacy.
- Correct it — edit your details in Personal info, or ask us.
- Delete it — delete your viewing history, or your whole account, yourself.
- Object or restrict — ask us to stop or limit certain uses of your data.
- Withdraw consent — e.g. disconnect Google sign-in by setting a password and contacting us.
To use any right, email support@hoktv.com. We will respond within 30 days and may need to confirm your identity. If you are unhappy with our response, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), or to your local data-protection authority if you live in the EU or UK.
9. Security
We protect your data with encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, sign-in cookies that page scripts cannot read, encrypted video streams and restricted staff access with logging. No service can be perfectly secure — use a strong, unique password, and tell us right away at support@hoktv.com if you think your account has been misused.
10. Children
HOK TV is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Members aged 13–17 should use the service with a parent or guardian’s permission. Titles show age ratings, and the 18+ filter in Content settings hides mature titles. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our practices change and show the new effective date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your data, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
